A Look Behind the Scenes

Discover the actual maps and images used in the articles about Osaka
4

If you have been following Old Photos of Japan articles for a while, you will know that most of the maps and images are from my own personal archive, the Duits Collection.

Digital scans do not fully capture their scale and presence. To offer a better sense of these historical materials, I have put together this short video of some of the actual maps and images introduced in my recent articles on Osaka.

While the clip does not replicate the experience of seeing the originals in person, it does make them a lot more real. Especially the sheer size of the Osaka City Panorama Map becomes clear.

I also share a few books and newspaper articles used in my research on Osaka. All together, I actually consulted some hundred books and research papers in this study.

Old Photos of Japan

Old Photos of Japan is dedicated to preserving, researching, and sharing Japan’s visual heritage of daily life from the 1850s to the 1960s. The project aims to ensure that this rich cultural legacy is passed down to future generations.

I share all my work for free so that anyone can explore it. However, building and maintaining the collection, and conducting in-depth research, requires significant time and resources.

If you have been thinking about supporting my project, now is a great time to help. You can contribute via Old Photo of Japan’s official support page. Thank you very much in advance.

If you have supported me in the past — or are still doing so now — you know how intensely grateful I am!
