Rare Great Kantō Earthquake Film

WARNING: FILM CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES【閲覧御注意下さい】

Back in 2016 I acquired a 9.5 mm Pathé-Baby film about the 1923 earthquake that devastated Tokyo and surroundings. After digitalizing I was a bit disappointed by the quality so ended up not doing anything with it—a painful waste of the more than 100,000 yen I spent on acquiring and digitalizing the four minute film…

However, the person that digitalized the film was excited. So just before the end of the disaster’s centenary let me share it with you. I have added a simple narration.

Notice that the title cards and several scenes have been freeze-framed. In 1923, film was expensive so scenes with little or no motion were briefly frozen. This resulted in less film being used saving the makers money.

Notches were added to the film to force projectors to briefly stop the film. You can see these (white) notches on the right just before the freeze.

The white area on the right is a notch in the film used for freezing this scene. The makers were possibly moved by the woman’s pained facial expression.

What makes these notches interesting to us is that they they tell us which parts of the film the filmmakers considered important to show longer. As the film was shown at events where donations were collected for the survivors, the makers likely selected these scenes for drama and impact.

Interestingly, Pathé introduced the lower cost 9.5 mm Pathé-Baby film as a system for amateurs in 1922. As it turned out, just in time for the disaster…

I published two articles about the 1923 quake this year. If you missed them, or would like to read them again, click the links below. They are among this year’s best.
