I am definitely putting the open air Japanese house museum on my must visit list for the next trip. There is an old farmhouse that was moved to the Yokohama Sankeien gardens that has a similar layout and has remnants of sericulture work too. I love visiting these old buildings and imagining the past.
Because the buildings are not being lived in I am usually not much of a fan of open-air museums. On the other hand the buildings that are being lived in are so modernized that it is hard to imagine how they were used in the past, so the museums play an important role in showing that.
I also recommend the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. Have you been there already? The Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum feels a bit more authentic though, the minka are clustered in a very natural manner and in beautiful surroundings.

Thanks for that! I may even try to fit in a visit with the silk tour group in ‘25 if we can make room.
That documentary about minka is a treasure isn't it! I can watch it again and again and notice something new each time.
This is so interesting! Thank you so much for all your research.
Thank you, Kristin. Very happy that you find it interesting!
