Wonderful. She’s beautiful. When I see pictures like this, though, I always wonder whatever became of the person. Thank you for sharing these.

Thank you, Ronald. Yes, I am the same way. It always bothers me that so many personal stories are gone forever. I am so grateful to people who wrote things down!

Thank you, Louise. It is an incredible story, isn’t it.

The story is deeply meaningful to me personally because it connects me forever with my friends. Sadly, the wife passed away late last year.

And the woman’s beauty is indeed stunning. I am grateful and honored that in this very small way I can keep her memory alive.

What a fabulous story! Obviously, you are fated to do this work. Tōji is one of my favorite temples, possibly my very favorite. I’ve never been there on the right day for the market, though! I have to make that happen! Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

Thank you, Maya. Tōji is beautiful, isn't it! It actually has two markets every month, on the first Sunday and on the 21st. I recommend arriving soon after it opens at 7 am.

What a lovely story. There are so many stories floating about us, and sometimes it gives perspective to one's own life, simply to stop and imagine these stories. Your photographs made me pause! Arigatou!

Thank you for your kind words!

It felt strange sharing something personal this time. Usually, I search far and wide for the stories of people who lived regular lives in old Japan.

Thank you, Kjeld, for sharing this post about your magical moment when inspiration strikes, about the spark that ignited a passion. I am glad that it seems to have turned out to be a fulfilling journey for you. Your collection is certainly very valuable to us, and I am sure to posterity too! It’s the little things, the individual lives, that add up to the fascinating tapestry of human cultural history that shaped who we are today. It’s worth remembering, from time to time. And it’s worth sharing.

Thank you for your kind words, Stefan. I will do my best to continue building this visual archive of daily life in old Japan. Each time I get to see a Japanese family's photo albums I realize how extraordinary the photographs in my collection are. Photo albums here feature almost exclusively formal portraits and group photos, mostly of family members. Somehow I have been able to collect images that show daily life…
